The role of the BRCP

Community rail is a growing, increasingly influential grassroots movement that works to build positive connections between communities and their railways. There are nearly 60 community rail partnerships in the UK, all working to promote, advise on and improve access to train services. Alongside them are hundreds of station friends and other local groups enhancing stations and running volunteering or social enterprise activities.

Research reveals how successfully voluntary and community organisations can make use of communications to bring about social change, encouraging civic involvement and promoting more sustainable living. This underpins community rail’s purpose in promoting trains as part of sustainable and healthy travel; ensuring that the communities’ needs and aspirations are heard in the development of rail; and delivering wider social and economic benefit through engaging the community in connection with their railway.

The BRCP Steering Group

Environment sub-group

This sub-group is led by Alistair McNeill and Anne Maher who are on the BRCP Steering Group, and includes representatives from the Midlothian and Borders Councils as well as volunteer local representatives.

The sub-group meets monthly to pursue its remit of improving station environments, ensuring adequate signage at and around stations, and encouraging people to come to the train on foot, by bike or on public transport.
